A young man finds himself caught in a state of limbo. Disembodied, he encounters memories he doesn’t recognise and bargains with a presence he doesn’t know. In his attempt to escape this kafkaesque conundrum, he finds himself confronted with an irreversible choice. 

Ein junger Mann ist plötzlich in einem Limbo-Zustand gefangen, körperlos, konfrontiert mit Erinnerungen, die er nicht erlebt hat und mit einer unbekannten Präsenz verhandelnd. Der Versuch, sich aus seiner kafkaesken Lage zu befreien, führt ihn zu einer Entscheidung mit unwiderruflichen Folgen.

With a vibrant animation style reminiscent of classical Japanese anime, Mawtini tells the story of a cybernetically-enhanced couple trying to flee 90s war-torn Baghdad with a newborn child in tow. On their way out, they must overcome killer robots that have invaded their country. Expertly crafted and lovingly told, this film presents both a vision of the past and the future in spectacular, action-packed images.

Mit einem dynamischen Animationsstil, der an japanische Anime erinnert, erzählt Mawtini die Geschichte eines mit mechanischen Körperteilen ausgestatteten Paares, die mit ihrem Kind die Flucht aus dem vom Krieg zerstörten Bagdad der 90er Jahre wagen. Auf ihrem Weg müssen sie sich den mörderischen Robotern stellen, die in ihr Land eingedrungen sind. Meisterhaft gestaltet und liebevoll erzählt, präsentiert dieser Film gleichzeitig eine Vision der Zukunft und der Vergangenheit in spektakulären, actionreichen Bildern.

As Najib slowly uncovers old secrets from his neighbor’s political and romantic histories, he begins to form an unlikely connection with a man he did not really know while growing further into himself.A gentle ode to diaspora, belonging and identity, uttered in whispers and reveling in the unsaid.

Wie ein umherstreifender Geist erkundet Teenager Najib die Wohnung seines kürzlich verstorbenen Nachbars. Sie kannten einander nicht wirklich, doch während der junge Mann langsam alte Geheimnisse aus dessen politischer und romantischer Vergangenheit freilegt, beginnt Najib unerwartet eine Verbindung zu ihm aufzubauen und sich selbst zu finden.
