Gidi Dar gehört zu den profilierten Filmemachern Israels. Seine Filme kreisen häufig um jüdische Identität, religiöse Traditionen und gesellschaftliche Bruchlinien in Israel und verbinden Humor mit existenziellen Fragen. International bekannt wurde er mit „Ushpizin – Die Gäste“ (2004). Der Film war einer der ersten, der das Leben einer ultraorthodoxen Familie aus ihrer eigenen Perspektive erzählte. Mit „Legend of Destruction“ (2021) schuf Dar einen außergewöhnlichen Animationsfilm über die Zerstörung des Zweiten Tempels. A badchan is far more than a wedding host in Orthodox Jewish tradition. Combining humorous interludes, songs and plenty of improvisation, he guides the guests through the celebrations much like a master of ceremonies. Moishe was once one of the most popular performers in the profession. But his sharp tongue and fondness for alcohol cost him both his reputation and his career.
When a wealthy childhood friend returns from the United States to celebrate his son’s wedding, Moishe sees a chance to make a comeback – and to earn the money he desperately needs for his own daughter’s wedding. But with American star badchan Meshulam – played by US stand-up comedian Elon Gold, who appeared at the 37th Jewish Culture Days Berlin – at his side, the festivities increasingly spiral out of control. With warmth and humour, Gidi Dar’s tragicomedy explores second chances while offering a fascinating glimpse into a Jewish tradition that remains largely unknown outside the Orthodox community.
With The Wedding Entertainer, the film programme of the 39th Jewish Culture Days Berlin opens with a special screening attended by members of the cast and filmmaking team.
Gidi Dar’s work frequently explores Jewish identity, religious traditions and the fault lines within Israeli society, combining humour with profound questions about life and faith.
