Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom
1993 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, from 1994 until 1999 he served as the first black President of South Africa: Nelson Mandela. After a poor childhood in the rural back country, he makes a name for himself in Johannesburg in the 1940s as a womanizer and attorney. Soon his first wife Evelyn leaves him, Winnie becomes the love of his life and a tireless companion. After some deliberation he joins the then non-violent African National Congress and comes into the crosshairs of the racist powers that be: Mandela is jailed.
More than 50 years of a life fully lived are being covered in Justin Chadwick's ("The Other Boleyn Girl") epic biopic about the great Nelson Mandela which follows the tried and true approach of Richard Attenborough's "Gandhi": He finds iconic images for Mandela's struggle against apartheid and stresses the emotional impact while keeping sugarcoating to a minimum. But it's Idris Elba's ("Prometheus") towering performance as the fearless leader of South Africa's black people that puts flesh and bone on the movie and makes it a must see.
